Credit Score 101: Boost Your Score and Reclaim Control

Your credit score is like a financial grade point average. It dictates whether you can buy a home, lease a car, or secure low interest rates. Yet, for many women, the credit score remains a mystery wrapped in a black box of banking jargon.

Let’s clarify this: your credit score is simply a metric of how well you play the banking industry’s games. It is not a report card on your personal worth.

1. Understand the Credit Score Breakdown

Your score is calculated using five factors:

  • Payment History (35%): Do you pay your bills on time? Even one late payment can drop your score.
  • Credit Utilization (30%): How much credit are you using compared to your limits? Keep this under 30%.
  • Length of Credit History (15%): How long have your accounts been open? Keep your oldest accounts active.
  • New Credit (10%): Have you opened multiple accounts recently? Avoid too many credit pulls in a short window.
  • Credit Mix (10%): Do you have a balance of cards and installment loans?

2. Keep Utilization Below 30%

If you have a credit card with a $1,000 limit, never carry a balance higher than $300. Credit card utilization ratio is computed monthly. If your balance is high, pay it down before your statement close date to instantly boost your score.

3. Set Alerts and Automate Minimum Payments

Since payment history is 35% of your score, missing a bill is costly. Set every card and loan to auto-pay at least the minimum payment due. You can always pay more manually later, but auto-paying minimums protects your record from late dings.
